Basic Materials and Additives
Basic materials of lubricants are generally base oil or base stock. And lubricating base oil derived from crude oil, although not all crude oil can be manufactured to become lubricating base oil. Only crude oil from paraffinic oil groups that is desirable to produce the base oil for lubricant. Unfortunately the source of this type of oil group is very limited.
In order to produce proper specification of lubricant that fits with the engine requirement, it is equally important to have proper selection of the lubricant additives to be put into the lubrication base oil.
Additives are basic chemical compound. Typically lubricants contain 90% base oil and less than 10% additives. Additives deliver reduced friction and war, increased viscosity, improved viscosity index, resistance to corrosion and oxidation, aging or contamination.
There are functions of additives, among them are used to impart performance characteristics to the lubricants. These include functioning as detergents, friction modifiers, antioxidants, ant-wear, viscosity index improvers and rust inhibitors. The fine lubricant would no longer need additional additives since it has contained additives within.
